Photo Essay: Chickadee Mind Games

March 29, 2009 | 1

What goes on in a chickadee’s mind when he’s looking for a seed he previously cached?

"Hmmm. Is this the tree I left my seed in?"
“Hmmm. It was this tree, right?”
"Yep. Sure looks it. I think I left it right over there..."
“It should be right in there…”
"If I'm right on this, the seed is buried right...in...here."
“Yep, right…in…here.”
"Wait! Where did it go?"
“Wait a minute! Where is it?”
"Let me try again."
“Let me try that again.”
"What? No good?"
“What? No seed?”
"Dang, dang, dang..."
“Is it mad cow?”
"Did I store it down there?"
“Well…maybe I stashed it down there?”
"Or over there???"

"Or over there?"

"I don't know..."
“Oh, God. Time to start geocacheing.”

These photos were taken at the Jamestown Audubon Center & Sanctuary  in western New York. The sanctuary has miles of peaceful trails surrounding a 600-acre wetland and a spectacular environmental education center. If you are anywhere near Jamestown and enjoy hiking or birding, especially if you have little tykes who need a good run or dose of nature, this is an excellent destination.
