Bluebirds Are Laying Eggs!

May 25, 2010 | 1

Bluebirds lay one egg per day...will "mine" lay a fourth or fifth?

The female bluebird has been a stealth operator lately. She’s nowhere to be seen. Even her mate is quiet and hard to find. It gives the impression that the birds have moved onto greener pastures.

Instinctually, that’s exactly what the bluebirds hope…that large, gangly “predators” such as me remain oblivious to their presence while they lay eggs.

The female sneaks in the morning, leaves her powder-blue egg, then quietly watches the nestbox from a hidden perch. I monitor the nesting activity, but generally make myself scarce and keep my kids’ backyard commotion under control during this time. I guess you could say it’s like “walking on egg shells.”

Update: Five eggs!
