Park Motel and Cabins in Tupper Lake, New York

June 13, 2010 | 2

Our Adirondack adventures took us to the town of Tupper Lake on Sunday night, Tupper is a perfect jumping off point to reach the boreal birds and Spruce Grouse located at Massawepie Mire, located about 15-20 minutes west on NY 3.

It’s also just moments away from The Wild Center, a Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks. The Wild Center is a science-based organization that helps visitors make connections between the varied habitats, wild creatures, and ways of living in the Adirondacks.

The Wild Center has hands-on nature exhibits, including hundreds of live animals from rare native trout, to river otters, to turtles the size of walnuts and many other often hard-to-see residents of the woods and waters. You can hike and explore the Museum’s 31- acre campus with naturalist guides or on your own. Watching playful otters dart, roll, and tumble in their tanks is a hoot.

Our hosts this night were Maggie, Jerry, & Dave from Park Motel & Cabins, located on the main drag in Tupper Lake. Featuring spacious motel rooms with loft ceilings and private, fisherman-style cabins in the back, the place offers simple comforts in a family-friendly setting. Guests can entertain themselves in the in-ground pool or enjoy several nearby dining opportunities.

Maggie and her friendly cat greeted us warmly and showed us our rooms, just steps away. I was surprised by their size. Plenty of floor space, two queen beds, and a loft ceiling with transom windows give it a large, open feel. This place will easily fit a family of four (six if you’re close!) – or a person like me with lots of equipment.

The owners are regularly updating the property and decor; just this month they installed carpeting in the private cabins, made capital improvements, and replenished the gardens with fresh flowers. The latter sure works for the birds: a Ruby-throated Hummingbird was seen enjoying nectar on the bleeding heart. We also heard Chipping Sparrow, American Robins, and other garden birds.

What the Park Motel lacks in modern decor it makes up for in nostalgia and true-grit ADK utility. The rooms are large and clean, they’re in good repair, they’re centrally located, and with rooms starting at just $55/night in the spring season (your 3rd night is half-price), the price is right.
